  • Pedro Amaral Frazão assumes Presidency of the Portuguese Shipowners’ Association

    Pedro Amaral Frazão today assumed the Presidency of the Board of the Portuguese Shipowners’ Association (AAMC), succeeding Rui Raposo, who led the Association for several years and played a decisive role in strengthening its institutional standing and representing the interests of Portuguese shipowners.

    With this transition, he now leads the organization representing the national maritime transport sector, while also integrating international bodies, holding a seat on the Board of Directors of the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) and on the Board of Directors of European Shipowners | European Community Shipowners’ Associations (ECSA), thereby reinforcing the presence and influence of Portuguese shipping in the main international forums.


    About the Portuguese Shipowners’ Association (AAMC)

    Founded in 1995, its purpose is to defend the interests of companies engaged, directly or indirectly, in the maritime transport industry, promoting their development in all aspects and fostering cooperation with foreign counterparts. It plays a central role in safeguarding the sector’s interests and in promoting the development of the national merchant fleet, particularly in a demanding context shaped by the challenges of decarbonization, competitiveness, and the evolving European regulatory framework.


    Biographical Note

    Pedro Amaral Frazão is a Navy Captain, having developed a long career in the Portuguese Navy marked by command, executive and staff roles, including participation in NATO and national operational missions. Since 2013, he has been active in the private sector in the maritime-p)ort, logistics and energy fields, having served as Board Member and Chief Sustainability Officer of Grupo Sousa.

    He currently also serves as Advisor to the Chairman of Grupo Sousa for Corporate Social Responsibility, Vice-President of GRACE – Responsible Business Association, and member of the Strategic Council for the Economy of the Sea of the Portuguese Business Confederation (CIP), as well as of the Low Carbon Fuels Platform.

  • Portuguese Shipowners´ Association New Secretary-General

    On April 1st, Captain (Navy) Pedro Amaral Frazão took office as Secretary-General of the Portuguese Shipowners´ Association, relieving Captain Joaquim Fernandes Coelho.


    Before joining the Portuguese Shipowners´ Association Captain Pedro Amaral Frazão was Director & CSO (Chief Sustainability Officer) of Grupo Sousa, a Portuguese Corporate Group, being responsible for Energy, Corporate Sustainability and Social Responsibility, Strategic Communication, Safety and Security. From 2013 until 2022, he led the project implementation and conducted the “LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) Virtual Pipeline” operation between Portugal mainland and Madeira Island.


    Captain Pedro Amaral Frazão joined the Portuguese Navy in 1982. He embarked on board “Comandante João Belo” Class frigates participating in Standing Naval Force Atlantic (STANAVFORLANT) and Naval On-Call Force Mediterranean (NAVOCFORMED) operations,

    and took Command of patrol vessel “Zaire”. Among other posts ashore, he served in NATO (CINCIBERLANT, Oeiras), in the Portuguese Military Mission to NATO and EU (Brussels), as

    planning officer in the Portuguese Navy Staff and Advisor to the Minister of National Defense. In 2012 he left active service at his request, after his final tour of duty as Madeira Maritime Zone

    Commander, Funchal and Porto Santo Port Captain, and Madeira Maritime Police Regional Commander.


    Currently, Captain Pedro Amaral Frazão is a Board Member of GRACE – Responsible Business Association, Adviser to Grupo Sousa Chairman and ODS Portugal Ambassador for SDG 17, also

    participating in Energy, Decarbonization and Economy of the Sea Advisory Bodies, and a regular speaker at conferences on Shipping, Sustainability and Corporate Social Responsibility.
